If you read my last post — Older Puppies Learning New Tricks with Claude — you know that I spent a significant chunk of time this week discovering that Anthropic has a free, self-paced learning academy with sixteen courses and certificates of completion.
Today, I'm doing something about it.
Starting this Friday, April 3rd, I am beginning a structured, one-month journey through the Anthropic Academy curriculum. I've mapped it to my specific portfolio — The Urban Bloom Project, Silver Toile, my digital finance education platform in progress, my Baltimore real estate investments, and my ongoing job search — and I'm sharing the full roadmap here so you can follow along, or build your own version.
Let's get into it.
Why Certification Matters Right Now
I want to be honest about my motivation, because I think it's one that most of you will recognize.
I'm not doing this just to learn. I'm doing this to signal that I've learned — intentionally, rigorously, from a credible source. In a world where everyone says they "use AI," holding a certification from Anthropic — the company that built Claude and is widely considered one of the most thoughtful organizations in the AI space — is a differentiator.
For me specifically, these certifications will:
Strengthen The Urban Bloom Project's grant applications. Innovation-focused funders want to see that the organizations they invest in are forward-leaning. A certified AI framework is evidence of that.
Add weight to my job search profile. I'm targeting senior nonprofit and higher education roles in the DC/MD/VA region. AI fluency at a certified level is increasingly a differentiator in these fields.
Give me the standing to teach it. My goal is to embed AI literacy into the education and training programing I'm involved. You can't credibly teach what you haven't formally studied.
Build authority for my digital finance education platform. As I develop that concept from passion project to learning destination, having Anthropic certifications behind me matters.
Eight certificates. Thirty days. Starting Friday.
The Full Course Lineup — and Why Each One Is on the List
Before I share the schedule, here's the complete set of courses I'm completing and the reasoning behind each.
1. AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations The prerequisite for everything else. This is where I learn the 4D Framework — Delegation, Description, Discernment, and Diligence — that underpins every other course in the catalog. Think of this as the operating system before you install any apps.
2. AI Fluency for Nonprofits Built in partnership with GivingTuesday, based on real research with nonprofit professionals. This one is directly applicable to The Urban Bloom Project's grant writing, communications, program delivery, and operations. It's the most immediately useful course in my lineup.
3. Claude 101 This covers the Claude features I'm probably underusing: Projects, Skills, Artifacts, Research mode, and Cowork. Even as an experienced Claude user, this course is likely to surface tools that would meaningfully accelerate my work across all five ventures.
4. AI Capabilities and Limitations This is the "how does it actually work" course — and it's essential for anyone who wants to use AI responsibly and teach others to do the same. Understanding why Claude sometimes gets things wrong makes you a much sharper operator. It's also foundational for building credibility as a content creator and platform builder in a space full of AI misinformation.
5. AI Fluency for Educators With twenty-plus years in education and programs like the Excellence Lab and HYPE on my roster, this course helps me design intentional, AI-integrated curriculum. It's about applying AI fluency to learning outcomes and course design — not just using AI to grade faster.
6. Introduction to Claude Cowork This is the course I'm most excited about. Cowork lets Claude work directly with your files, apps, and documents — not just chat with you. Research and analysis at scale, document generation, scheduled tasks, Excel and PowerPoint integrations. This is the course that transforms AI from a conversation tool into a working partner.
7. Teaching AI Fluency This course is specifically designed for instructor-led settings, and it's the one with the highest long-term leverage. Once I complete it, I can incorporate the 4D Framework as a formal module inside HYPE and the Bloom Integrated Workforce Playbook — giving both programs a research-backed AI literacy curriculum with Anthropic's methodology behind it.
8. AI Fluency for Students Free, self-paced, certificate-bearing — and designed specifically for the population I work with through HYPE and Urban Bloom's youth programming. I'm taking it to understand it from the inside before recommending it to participants. Once I do, it becomes a plug-and-play deliverable I can point youth and young adults to directly.

🌟 May Stretch Goal: Building with the Claude API
For anyone who wants to go beyond content and start actually building — this is the technical course that makes that possible. My personal goal is to begin this in May as I flesh out my digital finance education platform concept. Not required for most readers, but worth knowing it exists.
How to Use This Schedule If You're Not Me
You don't have to follow my exact course sequence. But here are the universal starting points:
Always start with AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations — it's the prerequisite for every other course.
Pick the sector-specific course that matches your world — there are tracks for nonprofits, educators, and students.
Add Claude 101 regardless of your experience level — there are features in there most people aren't using.
Schedule specific days and times. Self-paced does not mean whenever-I-feel-like-it. Block it on your calendar the same way you'd block a class.
A Note on Progress Over Perfection
Life is full. I run a nonprofit across four cities. I invest in real estate. I'm job searching. I have this blog. I have a digital finance platform in progress. Some weeks will not go according to plan.
That's fine. The schedule is a guide, not a judgment. If I fall behind, I pick it up where I left off. The goal is eight certificates in thirty days — but nine certificates in thirty-five days still counts as a win.
I'll be sharing updates here and across my platforms as I go. If you decide to follow along, drop a comment and let me know which course you're starting with.
